If a day at the races is what you want then you came to the right city. The Irish are said to have horse racing in their blood and have won world renown in all areas of this sport. The Irish breed horses of international quality and the jockeys, trainers and owners are also highly regarded at international level.
Leopardstown racecourse is in Foxrock on Dublins southside and is the only racecourse within the city limits.
There are four other racecourses less than thirty miles outside the city. Special buses are laid on from Busaras in the city centre for all race meetings.
Fairyhouse Racecourse is in Ratoath, County Meath. The Irish Grand National is an annual event that attracts big crowds over several days.
The Curragh Racecourse Is in County Kildare about 30 miles outside the city. The Irish Derby is run there as part of a racing festival week every year. There is a regular train service to the Curragh. Naas Racecourse is also in County Kildare.
Punchestown Racecourse too is in Co. Kildare.
The meetings are timed so as not to coincide with each other. The result is that there are race meetings to attend all year round, more or less.
