Those two titles make alone make a visit to the Chester Beatty Library a must-see for the visitor - especially those interested in world cultures and religions. This National Treasure is conveniently situated in the centre of the city at Dublin Castle.
The Library exhibits a wonderful collection of treasures of icons, prints, miniature paintings, manuscripts, early printed books and objects d’art from round the world.
Take this opportunity to view the fascinating collection of Chinese jade books, Japanese containers for medicines and Persian manuscripts. The religions of the world are interestingly represented by books, manuscripts and paintings. The collection captures mankind’s creative expression from as far back as 2,700BC.
Brief HistoryThis astounding collection was brought together by Chester Beatty(1875-1968), a wealthy New Yorker, who settled in Dublin. He retired in 1950 and brought his collection with him to Ireland where he built a Library to house it. He was made Ireland’s first honorary citizen in 1957. He bequeathed his collection to the public and it was moved to Dublin Castle in 1999.
