About the James Joyce Centre
James Joyce - biography.
James Joyce was born in Rathgar, Dublin in 1882 and graduated from University College, Dublin in 1902. By then he had already shown signs of what was to come, having had an essay on Ibsen published – a feat which brought him to the attention of W.B. Yeats. He left Dublin in 1904 to work as an English teacher in Paris, Zurich and Trieste. During that time he established himself as one of the leading novelists of his day with “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”(1916), Ulysses(1922), and “Finnegan’s Wake” (1939). His reputation as a novelist stands to the present day.
Joyce also wrote short stories - the most famous of which was The Dead; which John Huston made into a memorable film. Joyce also wrote a collection of poetry. Strangely, though his writings are based in Dublin he never returned to live there. Joyce died in Zurich in 1941.
