About Ardgillan Castle and Demesne
Built in 1738 by Rev. Robert Taylor, Ardgillan, derived from Irish "Árd Choill" meaning "High Wood", is a large two story country house with magnificent views over the North Dublin village of Balbriggan coastline and the Irish sea. The house has been owned by Dublin County council since 1982, but remained in the Taylor family until as recently as 1962.
On view in the house there is a permanent exhibition of the Down Survey colour maps and the drawings and text of the Hutton Coachbuilders. The Kitchen and first floor rooms are open to the general public.
Ardgillan consists of not only the famous house. The grounds are very popular with visitors and include the Tea Rooms, the immaculately preserved Victorian conservatory and the famous Rose Garden, all set on the castle’s 200 acres demesne and woodlands.
Interesting fact At the end of the garden there lies a haunted bridge!. Located at the end of the garden, the pedestrian footbridge above the Balbriggan / Skerries Road and the Dublin - Belfast Railway Line, the bridge is known locally as “The Lady's Stairs”. According to local legend, The Lady’s Stairs are believed to be haunted by the ghost of a local woman killed there. Damaged when hit by a truck in 2006, it has been restored and is now reopen to the public.
Check out.. The walled herb garden. A herb garden has been laid out around a central lavender bed, and there is a neatly labelled herbaceous and shrub garden and Four Seasons garden (two seasons actually, as it is planted with tulips in spring and dahlias in summer).
