The History
The Gallery was first opened on 20 January 1908 in Clonmel House in Harcourt Street, Dublin. Originally known as the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, it was established by Hugh Lane and his friends with the intention of showing the best of modern Irish and international artists together. The founding collection included masterpieces by Claude Monet and Edouard Manet bought by Hugh Lane for the city of Dublin, as well as work presented by artists who shared Hugh Lane's ambitious vision for Dublin to become a leading cultural centre for the visual arts.
In 1933 the Municipal Art Gallery moved to its present location in Parnell Square. The collection has since grown thanks to generous support from many.
In 1998 the Gallery acquired the studio of Francis Bacon, one of the greatest post-war figurative artists of the 20th century.
In 2006, the Gallery's new extension was opened to critical acclaim.
In 2008, the Gallery celebrated its Centenery with a Programme of Exhibitions.
