About Malahide Castle

Malahide Castle stands on a 250 acres of park land in the seaside town of Malahide on the outskirts of Dublin city. This medieval castle, which also served as a home, was built by Robert Talbot in 1185. The Talbot family lived there until 1975 when the last of the Talbot family died. In 1975 the castle was sold to the Irish State by Rose, the sister of the last Baron Talbot, who died in 1973.

The castle architecture represents styles from different periods over the centuries. Inside the house the beautiful furnishings also represents various periods. In the great medieval hall the amazing history of the Talbot family hangs from the walls. Their story is told by the portraits of generations of the family. But it is not just their story for it shows the important and ongoing part that this castle and its owners played in Ireland’s turbulent history. In one of the happier stories the Talbot family were banished from the castle by Cromwell who replaced them with Miles Corbet. The usurper was hanged and the Talbots reinstated when Cromwell fell from power. A sad story concerns the Talbot family and the battle of the Boyne. Twelve members of the family had breakfast together on that morning before going out to fight in the battle. None returned for none survived.
