The National Photographic Archive was opened in 1998 as part of the National library and houses more than 6000,000 photographs. The collection can be viewed in the Reading room of the award winning building in Temple Bar, Dublin 2. Much of the collections can also be viewed online. A large majority of items available for viewing are of historical interest particularly of the 1916 rebellion, the War of Independence and the Civil war. There are also contemporary collections.
But there is so much more to make a visit well worthwhile detail of which you will find by consulting indexes in the Reading Room. For example there is a collection of photographs of most of the towns and villages in Ireland taken in the between 1870 and 1914. There is a collection of 4000 negatives from early to mid 1900's used to create Postcards for the famous Eason & Son bookshop in Dublin's. There are various exhibitions throughout the year.
