The Castle was declared a National Monument in the mid 1980s. It is estimated to have been built in 1583. It was built by Adam Loftus from Yorkshire,England who was the Lord Chancellor of Ireland and Protestant Achbishop of Dublin. Down through the centuries the castle was involved in many battles. In the later half of the 18th century this fortified medieval castle was converted into the Georgian mansion it is today. Vsitors can view layers of the castle’s earlier existence which were exposed by the researchers. The site was declared a National Monument in the mid 1980’s and is still under restoration.
