About The Shaw Birthplace
George Bernard Shaw was born in 33 Synge Street, Dublin 8 on July 26 1856. Shaw lived with his family at this address until he moved to London in 1876. The house has recently been converted into a Shaw Museum with a plaque bearing his name and the comment "Author of many Plays".
Number 33 was restored to its original in 1993 and going inside is like taking a step back in time to the style and charm of Victorian times. In fact a walk through this ordinary terraced house gives one a real insight into the domestic life of the of the ordinary Dublin citizen in those times. Although Shaw achieved his greatness after he left this house it is not unlikely that his imagination was already fired up with the characters and ideas that later led to his being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. I found myself mesmerised by these thoughts when I walked through the drawing room, front parlour and the childrens bedrooms of 33 Synge Street - all with their unique Victorian elegance.
