About the National Museum of Ireland
Ireland's premier cultural institution and home to the greatest collections of Irish material heritage, culture and natural history in the world. It is spread over three museum centres in Dublin.
The Natural History MuseumThe Natural History Museumis on Merrion Street and was opened to the public in 1857 with specimens of animals from around the world. Since then its vast and wonderful diversity has inspired and educated. This museum, which is world famous for its Victorian cabinet style, houses one of the world’s ‘finest and fullest collections’ to be seen today. On view are two million species of which half are insects. There are outstanding specimens of wildlife from Ireland and from the world over - some of which are long extinct.

The Archaeology Museum
The Archaelogy museum on Kildare Street opened in 1890 and by now has an extensive collection which will transport you back in time to 7,000BC. Visitors take time in viewing the Celtic and Medieval exhibits such as the Ardagh Chalice, the Derrynaflan Hoard and the Tara Broach. You will gaze in awe at the finest collection of prehistoric gold artifacts in Europe. It’s an opportunity to see what Ireland was like in prehistoric times. The Iron Age is well represented by in the Kingship and Sacrifice exhibition which is based mainly on bodies recently recovered from bogs as well as previous bog finds. Come and confront your ancient ancestors face to face. There are prehistoric ornaments from the Bronze Age in Ireland Ireland and special displays of items from Egypt, Cyprus and the Roman world.

Decorative Arts and History Museum
The Decorative Arts and History Museum is at Collins Barracks. This recent addition charts Ireland’s economic, social, political and military progress through the ages. It is done with displays of furniture, silver, ceramics and glassware - there are examples of folklife and costume, and money and weapons. These displays are done with an innovation which will excite your imagination to look that bit harder.
